Building From Scratch

1. Start with yourself — the default card "Me" is you. Tap it to open the detail panel
2. Edit details — fill in your full name, birth date, birthplace, occupation. Tap Save
3. Add a parent — tap "➕ Add Parent" in the detail panel. A blank card appears above you. Tap it to fill in their name
4. Add a spouse — tap "💍 Add Spouse/Partner". A card appears beside you. Add their details
5. Add a child — tap "👶 Add Child". A card appears below. If you have a spouse, the child links to both parents automatically
6. Add a sibling — tap "👥 Add Sibling". A card appears beside you at the same level
7. Keep going — tap any card to select it, then add relatives from that person. Build up (ancestors) or down (descendants)

Editing a Person

• Tap any card to open the detail panel
• Edit any field: name, dates, places, occupation, notes, sex
• Tap "Save Changes" to confirm
• Tap "Cancel" to discard changes

Deleting a Person

• Tap the card to open the detail panel
• Scroll down and tap "🗑 Delete Person"
• Confirm the deletion

Moving to or from another genealogy site? GEDCOM is the universal family tree format. Import from Ancestry, FamilySearch, or MyHeritage, or export your tree to take anywhere.

How to Import

1. Export as GEDCOM. On your current site, look for "Export" or "Download" and choose the GEDCOM format.
2. Import here. Tap the button below, select your .ged file, and your tree loads automatically. Your file never leaves your device.
3. Review. Large trees auto-focus on the most connected person. Tap any card to explore or edit.

Export creates a standard .ged file that any genealogy software can read. Your data never leaves your device.

After Import

• Use the zoom buttons to get the right view
• Tap "Fit" to fit the whole tree on screen
• Tap any card to drill in — the tree refocuses on that person's branch
• Tap the ← button (bottom left) to go back to the previous view

Multi-Marriage Support

If a person had multiple marriages, each spouse and their children appear as separate family units. The earliest marriage (by date) is shown as the primary spouse, with later marriages branching to the side.

Navigation

• Pan — drag the tree area with your finger or mouse
• Zoom — use the + and − buttons in the toolbar, or pinch on touchscreens
• Fit to screen — tap "Fit" to see the whole tree at once
• Focus on a person — tap any card to select it. Large trees auto-focus on the most connected person
• Go back — tap the ← button (bottom left) to return to the previous focus point

Saving & Loading Your Tree

• 💾 Save Tree — tap 🌳 Tree → Save Tree to download a .familytree backup file
• 📂 Load Tree — tap 🌳 Tree → Load Tree to restore from a previously saved .familytree file
• 📤 Share Tree — tap 🌳 Tree → Share Tree to save and share the file with family

GEDCOM Export

1. Tap 📖 Guide → Export GEDCOM (or the ⬇ button in the toolbar)
2. A .ged file downloads to your device
3. Import it into any genealogy app (Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, etc.)

Printing

• Tap 🌳 Tree → Print Tree to print the current view

Resetting Your Tree

• Tap 🌳 Tree → Reset Tree to wipe everything and start over
• You'll get a confirmation dialog — this cannot be undone
• Save or export your tree first if you want to keep your data

Theme

Tap the 🌙 / ☀ button in the toolbar to toggle between light and dark mode.

Privacy

Everything stays in your browser's local storage. No data is uploaded to any server. Clearing your browser data will erase your tree — save a .familytree backup to keep a copy.
